Facebook is planning two new headline features for its Facebook Messenger app, new code buried in the latest app has revealed.
According to The Information, the code hints at Facebook’s future plans to roll-out mobile payments within the app.
Facebook Messenger already allows users in the United States to send money to one another inside the app.
But this new feature is expected to make the service more of a fully-fledged Apple Pay rival.
Smartphone owners could be able to use the Facebook app to tap-and-pay, similar to a contactless Credit or Debit Card.
It is unclear from the code whether Facebook is planning to partner with an existing payment service to power its rival system, or develop its own.
Facebook Messenger would be joining an already crowded marketplace, with NFC-powered tap-to-pay smartphone solutions from Apple, Google and Samsung already available.
Whether customers are willing to adopt Facebook Messenger (which has a secret game hidden in it) as their default payment solution remains to be seen.
